I read an article in the January 2010 issue of Downtown Digest that had some very good points for small businesses to consider as the economy begins to recover and want to share them with you.
All retailers, large & small, need to be innovative in their merchandising, reaching out to new customers and addressing the value conscious consumer. We know that small businesses are closer to their customers and can react more quickly to consumer preferences - continue to be proactive, know what your customers want and keep or improve your level of customer service to increase your base and customer loyalty. Some lessons from Big Box stores that didn't survive are things small businesses need to keep in mind: Be aware of changing population and conditions so you can react with new products, services and keep your look fresh and interesting. And remember your look includes store displays as well as your website (if you have one). The article also encourages business owners to be aware of trends - watch for them, join them and add value to your customer's experience. If you would like to check out a site with a twice-monthly newsletter about small business trends you can try: www.smallbiztrends.com/
One more comment - during the Warm Up Festival this weekend the Scavenger Hunt to downtown businesses did provide the opportunity for some to find new locations they did not know existed in the City. Reports also came back that the business owners were very helpful and friendly helping the "hunters" find their way around to all the locations. Well done and thank you for participating!
